Day 7 Friday January 18

Day 7

Cal Expo RV - note lux security fencing

California government headquarters, private sector buildings and nature

Up at 7ish. Coffee and walk the dog. Quiet night in the Cal Expo RV parking lot/park. All showering except dog. Light rain, but mild temperatures. Shore power all night, so batteries brimming. Advocating pancakes out, but not clear yet whether the motion will carry.  Lots of giant mobile dwellings here and dogs. Quiet and orderly.  Extensive bike ride on what I thought of as the river trail but which turned out to be the Jedidiah Smith Trail took us past sporadic tent homes to a millennial coffee spot where we had the waffles. Home by a different route and we are done with Sacto and on the road to somewhere to camp in the south bay generally.  When the Diablo Mountain SP didn't pan I pushed for reentering the coast so we did. Didn't work out cause all open SPs were full and the KOA at Castaneo was 98$ and the hostel at Pigeon Point Light House was full and all the Californias were driving up and down the mid-coast at once. So S. threw up her hands and I checked us into a Best Western in Santa Cruz and we walked down a manic motel/fast food thoroughfare to a funny little restaurant that seemed to be experiencing some isolated and unexpected prosperity. They were alone among the motel chains and gas stations but had the white table clothes and complimentary croquettes. We, as campers, were budget conscious and only ordered 3 glasses of wine and the fried asparagus appetizer to the slight but apparent heartache of our gracious waitress, who several times mentioned the word "entree".  Bella has the bus to herself and we are only out 102$.  And the  appetizer, fried asparagus, which I learned was something you ordered for the table, not what I thought, which was one ordered it for oneself to which idea S said no and you should have learned that in your 70 years here.
